Christmas show and tell...

We love your show and tell... This is a small selection of pieces from the sit and sew sessions held in store each Wednesday (from 1pm - only $2 to come along...)

This is Jean's wallhanging.. She quilted it on her domestic machine - you should see the feathered borders! We've enjoyed watching Jean doing the blanket stitching by hand on Wednesdays (sometimes I think Jean comes up with projects especially to bring to sit and sew!!)
This is Larraine with a cushion she made from the Art To Heart book "Jingle All The Way"...

Elsa with her snowman wallhanging. Elsa says she really doesn't need to make any more Christmas projects - they are all over the house! But, stitching is so good for the soul!!

Dorothy learnt to foundation piece with Lorraine during Friday morning UFO sessions- look at those perfect points!

We love your show and tell, please bring in your projects to show us. It's inspiring to see projects that are in progress, even if they are not yet finished!

A little skirt...

Sylvia has been attending Friday morning UFO sessions with Lorraine (only $15 per class - get help with your current project!!)... she learnt machine quilting, quilt-as-you-go, and this was her most recent project.

G Point Quilt In

Thank you so much for your invitation to attend the inaugural G-Point quilt-in at Ballarat today.... We took a yummy selection of goodies... We were lucky to catch up with so many friendly faces!! And here was Bernie with her Ballarat Beauties quilt (just adding on the binding)... with lots of fabrics purchased from our store!!

And here she is again!! I love this fabric Bernie... what was it called? Oh yeah! Lincoln Bicentennial!!

Preparing for Christmas

Oh yes! It's nearly half way through November, so we are all madly sewing our Christmas projects in preparation for December 1st... our traditional day to start displaying our projects... or in my case... it's traditional to stay up late Christmas Eve finishing decorations and gifts at the last minute!!Wow... this is Antje's Christmas tree skirt. Antje chose the pattern from the book French Braid Obsession, then used a Christmas panel as her feature fabric. Antje attended UFO classes with Carol obtaining assistance as she needed it. It was then quilted by Wilma at Deep Creek Quilting.
This is Jaqi's 14 fat quarter quilt!! She chose fabric from Nancy Halvorsen of Art To Heart's latest range Jingle All The Way.

Jaqi quilted it herself... taking only a few days to put it together, quilt it and bind it.

Wow! Thanks for your inspiring show and tell girls....

Sharyn's piece de resistance

Well, Sharyn will remember this moment forever!! It's the GIANT purple quilt for her bed... that hangs to the floor.
She collected fabrics for years, and combined with new pieces purchased especially for this quilt.

Here it is in its dazzling glory. Sharyn's most favourite quilt yet. Congratulations Sharyn. (She is the clever lady hiding behind her huge quilt).....

Lotus fabrics in store

This is the Lotus panel.

These co-ordinates are also available.

The fabrics feature striking colours, and convey depth and dimension.
So, what could you make? This is a sample whipped up overnight by Lorraine - featuring the Lotus panel surrounded by green borders, blossom borders and large peonies. A green binding will follow.

Shelly made these pillowcases using quilter's muslin and Kashmir V fabric selections.

Shelly found an online video tutorial for making the pillowcases with french seams, a variety of trims - or even piping.

This is a quilt she made using a "swag" - that's a roll of fabrics cut at 5.5 in wide.

This simple arrangement showcases the fabrics. Delightful.

What a lucky, lucky, young woman... This is only one of Stef's 21st birthday presents.

Made by Sharyn. Yes, this is her THIRD fat quarter quilt, and they all look very different!! These blocks are alternately bordered in black and pink to increase the size of the quilt to fit a Queen bed.

Daring Dragons

Fiona wanted to make a quilt for her son. Where are all the boy quilt patterns??

Lorraine recommended this pattern set by Natalie Bird of The Birdhouse: Daring Dragons.

The pattern contains a quilt pattern, runner for the end of the bed, and pillow instructions.

Lorraine suggested a runner might be a bit impractical for a boy - how about appliqueing the dragons over the pieced blocks?

And this is the end result.

Even with quilting right through the applique, it looks smashing!! Robbie loves it...

Judy's quilting

Judy loves to hand-quilt, but she doesn't like to be in photos. *grin*

This is an enormous Dresden Plate quilt she just finished. It is quite heavy - two people found it difficult to hold up properly for a photo.
Check out the Dresden Plate design quilted on the blank squares.

Update: Judy has been learning free-motion machine quilting in our UFO (UnFinished Objects) sessions.. (see the class list on the side bar for more information). Get out of her way! She is quilting up a STORM!!!

Kellee's first quilt

But, this is her first absolutely finished quilt. Made from a bali pop (same amount of fabric as in a jelly roll, but with batik prints).

Baltimore Album ca 1847 fabric

Do you love the look of Baltimore Album quilts, and want to create your own?Or perhaps you would like to use the "cheater" prints in this fabric range to create an authentic looking reproduction without hours of appliqueing??You could easily piece blocks then use the flower designs as borders or feature fabrics. (Can you tell the original quilt was photographed to provide the fabric design?? The "fake applique" is quite realistic.)The ombre fabrics in this range (those are the ones that vary from light to dark across the bolt) are seriously accurate reproductions. Especially, for the Prussian blue print - the original Prussian blue fabrics were not colourfast. They looked fantastic, until they were washed. The ancient dyeing techniques cannot be replicated for safety reasons, so we cannot duplicate the bright blue that they obtained in the 1840s. However, our blues are colourfast, and more modern techniques are developed each year. I believe we are reaping the benefits in this fabric range.

We are pleased to announce that the first bolts of fabric in the Aboriginal artwork collection have arrived in store! Real paintings by authentic Aboriginal artists have been printed onto fabric in a variety of colourways.

Not all Aboriginal fabrics are orange and black - these prints (and many more) reflect the colours in the natural landscapes all over Australia (deserts, rocks, coasts, forests).

We love combining these fabrics with Kaffe Fasset prints as well as solid quilter's muslins.

Hmmm... perhaps you think it's too early for Christmas??? We are not yet celebrating Christmas, but we are preparing for Christmas in July!!

The entire new Nancy Halvorsen (from Art To Heart) Christmas range is now in store and online.

Last year the fabric range was almost gone by September, when most people really started to look for their Christmas prints.

Make sure you get in early. There are 36 prints, plus the panel (shown at the top of the screen)...

We wait in eager anticipation for Nancy's new book which will feature projects made using all of these fabrics.

Please don't drool on the quilt

Our quilting interests tend to cycle... sometimes we just want to hand sew, other times we want to follow a pattern without having to think too much, and yet other times we want to let our creative juices flow... uninterrupted, without thinking too much.

That's why this project feels just right for me at the moment. You can sit down to machine piece the silks together.

Then carry the blocks around and enjoy embellishing them at liberty... or select designs to replicate or alter...

This is a customer show and tell piece.

The silks glow and shimmer. It eminates warmth. And makes me feel cosy.

Now, I just want to sew! sew! sew!!

We love picking fabric

Oh yes, we love picking fabric. Exactly the right prints for these house appliques were found on our shelves. Would you believe they were purchased on Sunday, and we were lucky enough to see this cushion on Tuesday? It's beautiful. The designer (as you can see, she is not pictured) will soon be releasing the cushion as a pattern. Thank you for sharing with us.

Simone is a slave to English paper piecing. Totally addicted.

She came along to UFO classes with quite a number of projects that were almost finished. This quilt features fabric from her Nan's stash. I have identified some of the fabrics as genuine pieces of 1930s fabric. How special???

They can look soft, warm, bright, subtle.... but they always add depth and interest to your projects.

We keep a large range in store at all times (currently we have about 40 bolts in store) - these are not all on our website.

Generally, batiks are one-off fabrics (they are hand-produced) and can rarely be re-ordered.

Seeing a good batik fabric is like seeing a pair of shoes you like. You HAVE to buy it when you see it, it just won't be around when you are looking for it.

Swirls are the perfect complement to the linear geometric pieced quilt.

Everyone is trying to finish their Christmas gifts at the last minute! Not these ladies though. They have all finished at least one table runner now. We are running the Quilt-As-You-Go table runner in term 2 next year. You don't have to use Christmas fabrics, although it does make you use it for at least one month per year!!

UFO sessions

UFO sessions - where you can learn just about anything!!

Gabbie brought in a quilt (only the second quilt she has made) that she wants to machine quilt. She really just thought she needed a few pointers on stippling. Well, guess again! Lorraine showed her how to "really" baste a quilt for machine quilting (especially dense quilting).

Then Lorraine showed some other "fill" stitches other than stipple (which can be quite difficult for beginners to obtain smooth curves of even sizes). This fill stitch was perfect for Gabbie. She could backtrack, stop at pointy bits,and get of a corner she had sewn herself into. As you can see the quilting looks fabulous.

Alison wanted to make a quilt for a sick friend - but she was in a hurry. Alison dug out these blocks and pieces that were already made, but she didn't know what to do with them.

Alison came along to UFO class. Lorraine did the calculations, Alison cut and sewed. Doesn't it look great? Alison sure looks pleased. Thanks for showing us before you give it away Alison. Amanda has made a few quilt tops before (and started a whole lot more!!), but this is the first quilt she has almost finished. It's the 12 fat quarter quilt (see our class list on the side bar) made with William Morris fabrics from The Adelaide Collection.

"Welcome To The North Pole" is such an exciting class!! There is always so much to look at!

Here we have some show and tell from the second year's graduates.

Everybody has made their quilt truly their own.

These are ready for embellishment - the last step in the class. (Even if you don't get the embellishment finished this year, you can still hang the quilt!!).

We started these quilts in August to allow participants plenty of time to complete their quilts."Deadlines" for each stage definitely help you to get a move-on with your quilt!Have you always wanted to make the North Pole quilt? Wow Alex! Look at you go! We recently ran a class on scalloped edges here at the Quilter's Bazaar.
This is the table centre Alex made using fabrics from her stash (yes, I have some of those Robyn Pandolph fabrics too... circa 2000 I think). She has even fussy-cut the centre. Whoops! We've taken the photo upside down!

Okay, so you use one fabric to make lots of blocks - focussing on a different part of the fabric for each block. Cool huh?Then Jean added three-dimensional applique to the borders after quilting. WOW! What a wonder it is Jean!!

Okay, not everyone was so speedy (Marion had to cut her fabrics in class, but she is more than 3/4 finished!!)Isn't it wonderful to see sew many variations??This bottom one was made using pieces from a Christmas rainbows pack. There are only a few left... be quick! One rainbows pack will make 4 table runners (and you will have some leftover fabric too!).

Elsa enjoys sewing so much, she is nearly finished all her UFOs!! This quilt is just finished - quilted by Wilma. This Santa wallhanging is a small addition to a large Santa collection quilted by Elsa!! Elsa learned how to hand-quilt in UFO classes, and she has taken to it like a duck to water!!

This little swag is also hand-quilted.

We love 1930s prints as much as you do!! The stock photos for this range are more lurid than they appear in real life. This is our photo which gives a good indication of the colours from the Toybox range.

We have around fifty 1930s prints in stock.I love the nostalgic feel of these fabrics.Remember to add a little bit of black into your 1930s quilts to create a realistic reproduction (look at all the original quilts from the 1930s).
Fat eighths are a great size to collect your 1930s fabrics - most quilts in the era were scrap quilts, so you will want to collect lots of fabrics.

However, I can let you know we are running Lorna's 12 fat quarter quilt class again in Term 4.

If you want to make a fast quilt top with 12 special fabrics (in only one day!!), come along to our one day workshop on Saturday 30th October 11am-4:30pm.

New scalloped edges class

Create scalloped edges for completely different quilt finish!! What are scalloped edges? Trimming a quilt to create curved edges using binding cut on the bias.
Bring your small wholecloth quilt - already machine quilted (to be used as a wallhanging or tablerunner).

If you need help making a quilt sandwich or machine quilting your sample, please book into one of our UFO sessions.

During class Lorraine will demonstrate how to:

calculate the size of scallops to fit evenly around all sides to create smooth, even curves
mark and trim away the outside edge
cut and make binding on the bias
machine stitch the binding to the quilt
hand-stitch the binding to the quilt (this last step will not be finished during class time)

Can you see the tiny skerrick of sandpaper she is using here? Oh, we had a laugh!! Mitre 10 is straight across the road, but she doesn't need a new piece of sandpaper!! Hee hee.

Little dresses

Looking at these finished goodies makes us smile too Sue!

You couldn't wipe the smile off Sue's face when she came in to show us her latest finished items. Since she started attending UFO classes, Sue has finished quite a few quilts and pieces... she is gaining confidence in basting, machine quilting and freemotion quilting.

Sue used the little dresses panel (available in store) to make this little quilt and bag... and there is another quilt to be made for another little granddaughter.

Something tells me Grandma is going to keep the bag for herself though....

Mini magics

Fiona caught up on her monthly miniature homework. This is her latest finish. This is her favourite mini so far. I am sure it will become the centre of the large quilt she plans to make with when she finishes all nine mini quilts.Rosie has progressed. This is the centre of her latest miniature. Elizabeth also improved. She has started to stitch the stems on!!

And this last one is some more of Fiona's catching up. This was last month's homework. Fiona made 12 blocks instead of eight, as she just couldn't settle for the layout as it was.

Good on you ladies! We look forward to seeing Linda's homework next time...
