UFO sessions

We have a lot of fun in our UFO sessions. (That's a session where you receive help to work on your UnFinished Objects...) Sue is a regular UFO attendee on Friday mornings. Can you see the tiny skerrick of sandpaper she is using here? Oh, we had a laugh!! Mitre 10 is straight across the road, but she doesn't need a new piece of sandpaper!! Hee hee.

Rosemary is working on Welcome To The North Pole - using the original block setting as pictured in the book.

We love your blocks Rosemary!
Would you like to join us for UFO sessions? See the class schedule on the right for more details.

Little dresses

Looking at these finished goodies makes us smile too Sue!

You couldn't wipe the smile off Sue's face when she came in to show us her latest finished items. Since she started attending UFO classes, Sue has finished quite a few quilts and pieces... she is gaining confidence in basting, machine quilting and freemotion quilting.

Sue used the little dresses panel (available in store) to make this little quilt and bag... and there is another quilt to be made for another little granddaughter.

Something tells me Grandma is going to keep the bag for herself though....

What would you like to learn? We run UFO sessions all week: morning, afternoons and evenings. See the class list on the sidebar for more information.

A quick quilt top

Rhonda whipped up this quilt top using the new Julie Paschkis fabric panel "Oceanica". We hav
only a couple of panels left... please phone if you would like to order one.The fabric seems to glow doesn't it? I can't wait to turn my panel and co-ordinates into a warm, inviting quilt like this one. Now this is off for quilting by Wilma at Deep Creek Quilting.

New tablerunner show and tell

Why do these ladies look so pleased? I think you can see why!!
Look at their almost-finished QAYG (quilt-as-you-go) table runners!!

It always amazes me to see so how the different fabric choices go together.

Please bring your tablerunner in to show us when it is finished... won't you? (And the other two or three you will probably want to make!!).

We will schedule this class again in term 4.

It's fabric time!!

Lots of new arrivals are in store now!! So many jelly rolls and layer cakes have been in, and gone already, they didn't even make it to the website!! (I always find it hard to update these pre-cut items, as they do sell very quickly).

This scrumptiously warm and rich fabric range (sounds like Christmas pudding with custard...) is sure to tickle your tastebuds.. and it's non-fattening!! Introducing: Kashmir V - feel the warmth of the East Orient when you make a quilt reflective of ancient woven shawls and embroideries. There are 38 bolts in this range, and we have them all....Don't take my word for it, look at each fabric individually....We may still have some jelly rolls left... we have fabric packs available in: fat eighths, fat quarters, 25cm squares.

Simpler Tymes circa 1860

I don't know if they really were Simpler Tymes in around 1860.. maybe if you had servants anyway!! Our selection from the Simpler Tymes range (circa 1860) is both pretty and functional.
Blenders and zingers create texture in this collection.

Fat eighth and fat quarter packs are available.

Don't they look soft together?

These prints won't be in store for long...

Mini magics

Fiona caught up on her monthly miniature homework. This is her latest finish. This is her favourite mini so far. I am sure it will become the centre of the large quilt she plans to make with when she finishes all nine mini quilts.Rosie has progressed. This is the centre of her latest miniature. Elizabeth also improved. She has started to stitch the stems on!!
And this last one is some more of Fiona's catching up. This was last month's homework. Fiona made 12 blocks instead of eight, as she just couldn't settle for the layout as it was.

Good on you ladies! We look forward to seeing Linda's homework next time...

Homework for the teacher...

Sue brought this feature fabric into a UFO class and asked "What will I make with this?".
Lorraine quickly designed this colourful layout that allows the quilt to double as a play-mat. Naturally, it will also make a great cubby-house. *wink*
Sue has finished all her homework (the train tracks are made by ironing fusible web onto the back of black fabric, rotary cutting the fabric and positioning the track pieces on before fusing. Machine zig-zag secures the tracks to the quilt top.
Sue returned to class after some her homework, and said "How will I quilt it?".
I am really proud of you Sue, your quilt looks wonderful, and you made it all yourself.
Stay tuned to the class schedule button on the right for upcoming classes.
P.S. We have one place in the quilt as you go table runner this Saturday. Would you like to come along?

Time to learn

There is always time to learn something new - just because the school holidays are coming up, doesn't mean we should relax our brains too much!!

Okay, maybe you don't have much to do with the school holidays these days... check out our new "text books"!!

Show Me How to Machine Quilt by Kathy Sandbach.

If you have quilt tops galore and no time to mark them, you've come to the right place! Kathy takes the frustration out of machine quilting and makes it fast, fun and productive. The book includes step by step instructions for every stage of the quilting process with a troubleshooting guide.

Star Struck Quilts by Barbara H. Cline.

Mix and match stars and centre blocks to make 27 different quilts!! Build your star-making skills. Start out with simple patterns and move to complex patterns as you learn (and if you don't make them, how will you learn!!) Learn to create perfect 8-pointed stars that lie flat. Barbara will show you how to achieve the fine workmanship found in the quilts in her Mennonite community.

Tile Quilt Revival by Carol Gilham-Jones and Bobbi Finlay.

Versatile applique quilts inspired by 19th Century Tile Quilts. Big applique sections to show off your Kaffe Fasset and Amy Butler prints. Choose your favourite method of applique: raw-edge, fusible web, needleturn...6 projects ranging from traditional to contemporary...

You know, these books are better in person than on the screen. Why not pop in and have a look at these stunners??

But wait, more show and tell!!

Judi once started a stained glass quilt (did you see our last post?). However, it turned into a needle-turn applique project. This is it!!

Judi has now started another stained glass quilt - it's the pink background in yesterday's blog post.
But wait, there is more show and tell from Judi. These photos show both sides of her first "dangly stars" made in a fussy-cutting class with Andrea last weekend.

Yes, we get it Judi. You must love decorating for Christmas!! Me too!!

Stained Glass show and tell

Wow!! What a difference fabric placement can make. Have a look at these partially completed quilt tops made in the "stained glass" or "leadlight" style. Class participants chose fabrics to appear textured in a similar way to glass used in leadlight windows.

Some participants used the same fabric, but chose to use different areas of colour for particular shapes.

It was exciting for me to see the quilt tops grow.

I look forward to seeing each quilt top come back in for show and tell!!

Not all of the leading has been ironed in place yet, it is better to sew some of the underneath pieces before ironing more on top.

Thank you for joining us for a thoroughly enjoyable day with Carol.

Stay tuned for our new class schedule appearing on the right hand side bar soon.

Simone's great Grandma

Simone is hand-piecing a quilt from her great-grandmother's old doyleys and table cloths.

She is using the English cardboard template method of piecing. This is working really well - the linens cannot move, so there is no difficulty with grains etc.

What a great way to use some soiled or damaged embroideries.... Thanks for sharing with us Simone.

Rosie's show and tell

This is Rosie's garden - made from the pattern "Mary Ellen's Garden". This is us auditioning background fabrics for the pieced blocks.
Keep going Rosie! We can't wait to see it all finished!!

new Rainbows packs

Christmas! Christmas! Christmas! These Christmas Rainbows packs contain 40 strips cut 2.5inches x the width of the fabric (just like Jelly Rolls).
Traditional green and red, blue and silver, or ...

this is the black and gold. Actually, there is only one print that is definitely Christmas in this pack. The rest give a rather Oriental feel, and would suit decor any time of the year.
Have a look at Rhonda's quilt-as-you-go table runner so far (We have rescheduled 2 dates next term for this class).

The black and gold are simply stunning!!

Celebrating with Dorothy!!

Dorothy finished the baby quilt. Hurrah!!
Can you see her machine blanket-stitch, straight machine quilting with the walking foot, and free-motion machine quilting?

Dorothy came along to Friday morning UFO sessions to learn quilt-as-you-go.
